Types of Integrated Circuits
Integrated circuits (IC’s) can be categorized into 5 classes, namely;
- Small-scale integration (SSI) These contain 3-30 gates per chip
- Medium-scale integration (MSI) They contain 30-300 gates per chip
- Large-scale integration (LSI) These contain 300-3000 gates per chip
- Very large scale integration (VL SI) They contain more than 3000 gates per chip
- Ultra large-scale integration (UL SI) These contains millions of gates per chip
Further to this, we can subclassify IC’s into 6 types.
- Hybrid or multi chip IC’s
- Thin and thick film IC’s
- Monolithic IC’s
- Digital Integrated Circuits
- Analog integrated circuits
- Mixed-signal integrated circuits
Hybrid or multi-chip IC’s (operational amplifiers)
These types of IC’s are the most used in the amplification sphere. This is so because of their multi specifications and hybrid nature.
They contain both active and passive components and are mainly used for high-power audio amplification in the range of 5 watts and beyond.
Thin and thick film IC’s
In these IC’s, active and passive components are detached and only combined to form the chip as one block.
Formed on a silicon chip, these are the most used IC’s. They contain both active and passive components and have a wide variety of uses.
They are used in; amplifiers, voltage regulators, AM/FM receivers, and also in computer circuits.
Digital Integrated Circuits (Logic Circuits)
Micro-controllers and microprocessors fall under this category. They incorporate millions of logic gates and work on the Low and High or ON and OFF mode respectively.
Analog Integrated Circuits
Used for amplification, filtering, modulation, demodulation among other functionalities, These ICs work by processing continuous analog signals.
Timers and sensors fall under this type of IC’s
Mixed-signal Integrated Circuits
These types of IC’s incorporate both digital and analog signals.
Types of Transistors
Without transistors, I doubt there would be electronics. This is so because they are vital components and the building blocks of electronics.
Built of a semiconductor material such as silicon or germanium, a transistor is an electronic component that is mainly used to amplify signals and also acts as a switch.
A transistor has 3 terminals; Emitter, Collector, and Base. These terminals are connected with other components within a circuit to attain some intended results.
We could indeed say that transistors are gates that open and close when triggered by some action. It could be a signal, voltage, or current.
Well, there are two main types of transistors. They are; Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJT) and Field Effect Transistors (FET).
Under the Bipolar Junction Transistors, we have the NPN and PNP Transistors as shown in the symbols below.
Under the Field Effect Transistors, we have the Junction FET (JFET) and Metal-oxide Semiconductor FET (MOSFET) as indicated in the image below.

Types of Capacitors
A capacitor is a passive electronic component that is used to store electrical energy in an electrical field. This effect is known as capacitance. (Capacitance=electric charge/Voltage. C=Q/V
There are several types of capacitors and all of them have various capabilities and applications in the electronics sphere.
In addition, they come in different shapes and sizes and they are made of different materials depending on their functionalities.
Capacitors can be classified into four main categories which are;
Fixed Capacitors; They have a fixed capacitance. Their capacitance and functions are aligned with the dielectric used to make them.
Variable Capacitors; Their capacitance can be varied. Mainly used in the frequency tuning of radios.
Polarized Capacitors; These have both positive and negative polarity and can only be connected in one way in a circuit.
Non-Polarized Capacitors; They do not have a polarity and can be randomly inserted into a circuit.
The main types of capacitors are;

Types of Diodes
A diode is an electronic component that is made of semiconductor material and allows the flow of current in one direction.
It has two leads namely, the Cathode (+) and the Anode (-) and is also used for rectification.
There are over 25 types of diodes. These diodes perform various applications within electronic circuits mainly in regards to the transfer of current.

Types of Voltage Regulators
Voltage regulators play a very critical role in the electronics world. This is so because they help us achieve certain set voltages.
With these regulators, certain critical and sensitive components like microprocessor IC’s are protected from damage due to overvoltage.
Regulators work in a similar manner to a switching transistor. They have three pins. An input, output, and ground.
The output produces the set voltages notwithstanding the input voltage. This way the voltage critical components perform optimally.
