These are extremely important terms and gadgets in regards to car audio wiring.

Car Audio Wiring Gadgets and Terms

Kindly note that they will be not in any certain order. They include;

A watt (W) is the unit of power. One watt can be defined as the current flow of one ampere with a voltage of one volt.

This is a connector/socket that connects to the rear of your car audio and helps you in powering and connecting speakers, amplifiers, among other gadgets to the stereo.

Mean power, or root mean square (RMSpower handling, refers to how much continuous power the speaker can handle. … For example, a speaker with a 30W RMS rating but a peak rating of 60W means that the speaker can comfortably run with 30 watts of continuous power, with occasional bursts of up to 60W.

Car Audio Wiring Gadgets and Accessories

I want to share with you a guideline on how to do a complete audio wiring and set up.

Depending on the wiring setup, you will need some of the above mentioned car audio gadgets and accessories.

After you have acquired and ascertained that you have all that is required, it is time to start your audio wiring.

But before we do so, let me highlight some of the most important gadgets and accessories that you should give attention to.

First off, make sure you have a working 12 volts car battery. The battery will power all the gadgets.

With a good battery, you are halfway through the journey.

Below are the top rated 12 volts car battery brands. Kindly click on buttons to see the prices.

Expert Power

Car Radio

After the battery comes to a good car radio. Any car radio would be appropriate but ultimately, your budget will determine the one you acquire.

In my own opinion, a simple single din stereo would be enough. This so because, the audio output will be amplified.

But due to the features, the pricing may vary. Prices may range from as low as $30 for the single din BOSS Audio Systems 616UAB Multimedia Car Stereo to about $99 for the Pioneer MVH-S310BT Single Din.

This will be the nerve center of your audio wiring. This so because the audio amplifier will ultimately determine the audio output power.

Additionally, the amplifier will also determine the type of speakers, and the equalizer that you acquire for the setup.

Before you acquire an amplifier remember that there are two main classifications of car amplifiers.

  1. Stereo amplifier; This is an amplifier that is mainly built to produce mid and highs {Mid sound & High sound} audio output.
  2. Mono amplifier; On the other hand, this amplifier is built to produce LOW {BASS Sound} audio output.

Remember that amplifiers have channels as well. Channels are the number of available outputs.

In some instances, a stereo amplifier can be bridged to produce a mono audio output.

As an example and depending on your budget, you can get a stereo 4 channel amplifier and a 1 channel mono amplifier. The 4 channel would ideally feed 2 mid-range speakers and 2 tweeters while the mono would feed the sub-woofer speaker.

Below are some nice and affordable amplifiers you can try out.

Well, the other very important and vital appliance when considering doing some car audio wiring is the speaker.

To get some nice music, you will need a combination of 3 types of speakers IE;

  • Bass or Lows speaker
  • Mid-range or Mid speaker
  • Tweeter or Highs speaker

The bass speaker comes as a sub-woofer, mid-range mainly comes as a 6/9 though there are other dimensions while the highs speaker comes as a tweeter.

Before you think of acquiring a speaker, you should think about the impedance matching. What is impedance matching?

Impedance matching. A technique of electric circuit design in which one component provides power to another and the output circuit of the first component has the same impedance as the input circuit of the second component. Maximum power transfer is achieved when the impedances in both circuits are exactly the same.

This has been cited directly from

If you can manage to get an almost exact matching impedance between the amplifier and speakers, then you will achieve the greatest audio output ever.

If impedances are not well matched, the life span of your appliances is compromised and the audio output is not up to par.

Distortions, overheating, low quality output and other audio issues could be as a result of a failed impedance matching.

NB; A speaker has a positive and negative polarity and these should be connected accordingly.

Some of the top speaker brands you could have a look at are;

  • Pioneer
  • JBL
  • Sony
  • JVC
  • Boss

This is another very important car wiring accessory that you must put into consideration before you embark on the car audio wiring process.

This so because, there is a risk of fire if the incorrect cables are used for wiring mainly in regards to the battery to gadgets wiring.

On the flip side, excellent performance in regards to audio output can be achieved by using the correct cables.

Furthermore, you can also protect your car battery and other audio gadgets by using the correct cables to do your wiring.

Well, I would classify wiring cables into two categories;

  • Power (electrical) cables. These are used to transfer current and voltage from the battery or source of power to other gadgets.
  • Audio cables. These are used to transfer audio signals.

What matters most is the gauge of the wire. The bigger the gauge, the better the transfer of current.

Well, the good thing is that you can now purchase complete wiring kits that come with all the required cables and connectors.

I would encourage you to go for the complete wiring kits. Not only are they inexpensive, they also come with all the connectors and other wiring accessories that you may need.

Car audio wiring tips and procedure

Now that you have assembled all the necessary gadgets and accessories, it is time to start your wiring.

Before you start, the first thing is to identify and mark the car stereo harness wires.

A harness is the socket that connects to your car radio and has colored wires on the other end that helps you connect the stereo to power among other features.

In essence, a harness has;

  • Power input cables
  • Audio out cables
  • Remote out power cable
  • Power antenna cable

After identifying these, depending on the gadgets you have, the next procedure is to start the wiring.

In essence, a simple wiring could consist of;

  • Stereo
  • Equalizer
  • Amplifier
  • Speakers

First off, wire the stereo to the equalizer by connecting the audio out cables of the car audio to the audio in of the equalizer.

After this, wire the equalizer to the amplifier by connecting the audio out of the equalizer to the audio in of the amplifier.

Third, wire the speakers to the amplifier by connecting them to the audio out terminals of the amplifier.

This is just a basic guideline. You will need to tweak, configure and do some adjustments depending on how you want your wiring.

But above, I have shared with you in detail on how to achieve a great sound for your automotive.
